The Mission of the Security Services Group
The mission of the Security Services group in the Office of the CIO is to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of electronic resources, services, and data at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Security Services group views this as a goal that will be met through three primary strategies:
- Integrating security practices into the educational mission of the University
- Managing the full range of security related activities as a cohesively planned and coordinated process
- Strive to implement technical solutions to security problems that are as fully transparent to the campus community as feasible
Information Security: The methods, policies, and procedures that ensure protection of the organization's assets, accuracy and reliability of its records, and operational adherence to management standards.
The scope of the security group includes both well-defined areas (such as computer viruses, denial of service attacks, data integrity and policy compliance) as well as trying to anticipate future threats. Some non-security issues, such as SPAM, also fall to the security group. In the case of SPAM this is because it is now the primary means for the dissemination of computer viruses. Finally, the security group's scope includes information privacy. Ensuring information privacy presupposes information security.
Some specific goals of the Security Services Group are,
- To provide security oriented services to the campus community
- To foster constructive dialog pertaining to information security between the faculty, staff, and students and the information technology professionals on the Urbana campus
- To minimize disruptions to the University's primary mission of education and research due to cybersecurity attacks
- To minimize disruptions to the University's primary mission of education and research due to the techniques used to prevent cybersecurity attacks
Members of the University community are warmly encouraged to contact Michael Corn (mcorn@uiuc.edu), Director of Security Services and Information Privacy with their issues, concerns, or recommendations.
