The Mission of the Security Services Group


The mission of the Security Services group in the Office of the CIO is to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of electronic resources, services, and data at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Security Services group views this as a goal that will be met through three primary strategies:


Information Security: The methods, policies, and procedures that ensure protection of the organization's assets, accuracy and reliability of its records, and operational adherence to management standards.


The scope of the security group includes both well-defined areas (such as computer viruses, denial of service attacks, data integrity and policy compliance) as well as trying to anticipate future threats. Some non-security issues, such as SPAM, also fall to the security group. In the case of SPAM this is because it is now the primary means for the dissemination of computer viruses. Finally, the security group's scope includes information privacy. Ensuring information privacy presupposes information security.
